Itinerary

7:00 AM - 8:30 AM: Departure from Dar es Salaam

Pick up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam.

Scenic drive north along the coastline to Bagamoyo (approximately 1.5-2 hours).

8:30 AM - 10:30 AM: Kaole Ruins

Begin your tour at the Kaole Ruins, an archaeological site dating back to the 13th century.

Explore the remains of one of the earliest Arab settlements in East Africa, including two ancient mosques and a series of tombs with preserved pillars.

See the ancient baobab tree and learn about the early Swahili trading culture that existed long before the slave trade dominated the area.

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: The Caravan Serai & Fish Market

Transfer to the main town of Bagamoyo.

Visit the Caravan Serai, the courtyard where slave caravans from the interior ended their long journey. This was the original slave market.

See the Old Fort (Boma), built by Arabs and later used by the Germans, which overlooks the Serai.

Take a stroll through the vibrant Fish Market on the beach, witnessing the daily life of local fishermen.

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Lunch by the Ocean

Enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh seafood or local Tanzanian cuisine at a restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean.

1:30 PM - 3:30 PM: Catholic Mission & Museum

Visit the Holy Ghost Mission (Catholic Mission), established in 1868 by French Spiritan Fathers. This was a center for the campaign against the slave trade and provided refuge for freed slaves.

Explore the poignant Bagamoyo Museum located within the mission, which houses exhibits on the slave trade, colonial history, and local ethnic groups.

3:30 PM - 4:30 PM: German Colonial Architecture

Take a walking tour through the old town to see the decaying yet beautiful German Colonial Administration Buildings.

Pass by the Old German Post Office, Customs House, and other historic structures that reflect Bagamoyo’s time as the first capital of German East Africa

4:30 PM: Departure from Bagamoyo

Begin the journey back to Dar es Salaam, reflecting on the deep and layered history you’ve witnessed.

6:00 PM - 6:30 PM: Hotel Drop-off

Arrive back in Dar es Salaam and be dropped off at your hotel.
