What to Pack

  • A Gift for the Host Family: This is a cultural norm and a kind gesture. Practical gifts are best: school supplies (pens, notebooks), books, sugar, rice, cooking oil, or used (but good condition) clothing for children.
  • Modest Clothing: Dress conservatively out of respect. Avoid short skirts, short shorts, and sleeveless tops. Lightweight long trousers/pants and T-shirts are perfect.
  • Sturdy Shoes: For walking on farm paths and village trails.
  • A Warm Layer: Nights in the mountains can be cool.
  • Headlamp/Flashlight: Essential for navigating the homestead at night.
  • An Open Mind and Heart: Be prepared for basic facilities (e.g., pit latrines, no running hot water) and embrace the experience for what it is – a chance for genuine human connection.
  • Camera: Ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially adults.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival, Village Welcome & Farming Life

  • Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Pick up from your hotel in Lushoto or meeting point at the bus stand. Scenic transfer to a selected, welcoming village in the Usambara highlands. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your host family with a traditional welcome.
  • Mid-Morning: Settle into your simple but comfortable room in the family’s homestead. Enjoy a cup of local chai (tea) while getting to know your hosts through your guide who will translate.
  • Afternoon (12:00 PM – 4:00 PM): Join your host family or community members in their daily activities. This is a hands-on experience and may include:
  • Helping in the Shamba (Farm): Learn about and assist with cultivating local crops like maize, beans, bananas, and vegetables using traditional methods.
  • Animal Grazing: Accompany the family as they take their cattle or goats to graze.

    Food Preparation: Help with grinding maize or millet and preparing ingredients for the evening meal.

  • Evening (6:00 PM onwards): Share a delicious, home-cooked traditional dinner with your host family. This is a special time for stories, questions, and cultural exchange around the fire or in the main house.

 Accommodation: Traditional Homestay (Basic room with a comfortable bed, shared pit latrine toilet)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Morning Traditions & Farewell

  • Morning (7:00 AM – 10:00 AM): Wake up to the sounds of the village. Participate in the morning chores, which might include fetching water from the local source, feeding the animals, or preparing breakfast.
  • Breakfast: Enjoy a typical local breakfast with the family, such as “uji” (a local porridge) and chapati.
  • Mid-Morning (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Embark on a guided “Village Life Walk” with a family member or local guide. Visit key village sites such as:
  • The local primary school.
  • The village meeting point.
  • A local traditional healer (optional and with respect).
  • The most scenic viewpoints of the terraced farms.
  • Lunch & Farewell (12:00 PM – 1:30 PM): Share a final lunch with your host family. This is a time for heartfelt goodbyes and perhaps exchanging contact information. You may wish to present a small gift to the family as a token of appreciation (school supplies for children, sugar, or rice are often appreciated).
  • Afternoon (1:30 PM onwards): Transfer back to Lushoto town or your original meeting point, concluding the homestay experience.
