This short but action-packed safari offers a fantastic introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife in the accessible Mikumi National Park. Often called the “little sister” of the Selous, Mikumi’s floodplains and miombo woodlands are home to a wide variety of animals, including lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, and hippos. This cost-effective trip is perfect for travelers coming from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

Best Time: Year-round, but best game viewing is from June to October (Dry Season).

Itinerary

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi & Afternoon Game Drive

  • Morning (6:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Early morning pick-up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam. Begin the scenic drive towards Mikumi National Park. The journey takes you through changing landscapes, including the Uluguru Mountains.
  • Lunch (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM): Arrive at a budget lodge or campsite just outside the park gate. Check in and enjoy a prepared lunch.
  • Afternoon (1:00 PM – 6:00 PM): Enter Mikumi National Park for your first thrilling game drive. You’ll explore the Mkata Floodplain, the heart of the park, which is often compared to the more famous Serengeti. Spot elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, and giraffe against a stunning backdrop.
  • Evening (6:30 PM onwards): Return to your lodge or campsite for a relaxing evening. Enjoy a hearty dinner and share stories of the day’s sightings. Overnight at the budget accommodation.

Accommodation: Budget Lodge or Permanent Tented Camp (with shared facilities) / Basic Camping

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Return to Dar es Salaam

  • Morning (6:30 AM – 11:00 AM): After an early breakfast, head back into the park for a final morning game drive. The cool morning is the best time to look for predators like lions and leopards becoming active. You may also see hippos returning to their waterholes. This is your chance to photograph the wildlife in the beautiful morning light.
  • Late Morning (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Exit the park and return to your lodge to freshen up and collect your luggage.
  • Lunch & Departure (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM): Enjoy a final lunch at the lodge.
  • Afternoon (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Begin the journey back to Dar es Salaam, with a stop for refreshments if needed.

Drop-off: You will be dropped off at your hotel in Dar es Salaam or at the airport for your evening flight (e.g., to Zanzibar).
