Itinerary

Day 1: Into the Wild & First Game Drive

  • Morning: Pick up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam or meet at Selous’ Mtemere or Matambwe Gate. Scenic drive into the heart of the reserve, with your first game drive en route to the campsite.
  • Lunch: Arrive at the exclusive, remote bush campsite. Our crew will have camp set up. Enjoy a welcome lunch.
  • Afternoon: Embark on an extensive afternoon game drive. The Selous is known for its large populations of elephants, wild dogs, hippos, and crocodiles. The varied terrain of savannah, woodland, and wetlands supports an incredible diversity of life.
  • Evening: Return to camp for a sundowner around the campfire, followed by a hearty dinner under a blanket of stars.

       Accommodation: Remote Bush Campsite (Dome tents with shared bush facilities)

       Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Full Day of Game Drives & Wilderness Exploration

 

  • Full Day (6:30 AM – 6:00 PM): After an early breakfast, depart with a packed lunch for a full day of exploration. Your guide will take you to different areas of the reserve, such as the Lake Tagalala region or the Beho Beho hot springs, searching for the reserve’s famous inhabitants, including the rare African wild dog.
  • Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot deep in the bush.
  • Afternoon: Continue your game viewing, focusing on areas known for predators like lions and hyenas. The vastness of the Selous means you’ll likely have sightings all to yourself.
  • Evening: Return to camp, exhausted but exhilarated. Share stories over a delicious dinner.

       Accommodation: Remote Bush Campsite

       Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: River Adventure & Changing Camps

  • Morning: After breakfast, break camp. Enjoy a final game drive as you transfer to a different area of the reserve, closer to the Rufiji River.
  • Lunch: Set up at a new riverside bush campsite and enjoy lunch.
  • Afternoon: Embark on a thrilling boat safari on the Rufiji River. This is a unique opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds from a completely different perspective. You may see elephants, giraffes, and antelope coming down to the water’s edge to drink.
  • Evening: Return to your new campsite for dinner. Falling asleep to the sounds of hippos grunting from the river is an unforgettable experience.
  • Accommodation: Riverside Bush Campsite
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Walking Safari & Departure

  • Morning (6:30 AM – 9:00 AM): A truly authentic start to the day with a guided walking safari (led by an armed ranger). Experience the bush on foot, learning to track animals, identify plants, bird calls, and appreciate the smaller details of the ecosystem.
  • Breakfast & Pack-Up (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM): Return to camp for a full breakfast and to break down the campsite for the final time.
  • Final Game Drive & Departure (11:00 AM – 2:00 PM): Begin your journey out of the reserve, enjoying a final game drive en route to the gate.
  • Afternoon: Transfer back to your drop-off point in Dar es Salaam.
