Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival, Hike to Sanje Waterfall, and Cultural Immersion

  • Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Pick up from your hotel in Mikumi or Morogoro. Alternatively, meet at the park gate if arriving by bus from Dar es Salaam. After registration and briefing by a park ranger, begin the hike on the Sanje Waterfall Trail.

The hike is a steady ascent through dense, moist forest. Your guide will point out unique flora and fauna, with chances to see the Udzungwa red colobus monkey and the Sanje crested mangabey (both endemic and found nowhere else on Earth).

  • Lunch (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM): Enjoy a packed picnic lunch at the spectacular Sanje Waterfall, a three-tiered cascade that plunges 170 meters into the valley below. You can take a refreshing swim in the natural pool at the top.
  • Afternoon (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM): Continue exploring the waterfall area before beginning the descent back to the park gate.
  • Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM): Transfer to your budget accommodation in the nearby village of Mang’ula.
  • Evening: Enjoy a prepared dinner. You can optionally visit a local village for a cultural experience (additional cost may apply).

Accommodation: Budget Guesthouse/Lodge in Mang’ula (e.g., Udzungwa Forest Camp, Twiga Hotel) or Basic Campsite.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Sonjo Trail Hike and Departure

  • Morning (7:30 AM – 12:00 PM): After an early breakfast, return to the park for a different hiking experience on the Sonjo Trail. This trail is excellent for bird watching and offers a different perspective of the forest ecosystem. It is less strenuous than Sanje and rich in biodiversity, with a high chance of seeing other primate species like the black-and-white colobus monkey.
  • Lunch (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM): Enjoy a final picnic lunch at a scenic spot within the park or back at the park gate.
  • Afternoon (1:00 PM onwards): The tour concludes. You will be dropped off at your point of origin in Mang’ula or at the main road for your onward bus travel to Dar es Salaam, Iringa, or Mikumi.
